The University of Saint Mary of the Lake is a seminary and school of theology for people who would like to become priests of the Roman Catholic Church. The University of Saint Mary of the Lake is regarded as the oldest institution of higher education in the city of Chicago. It applied for an academic charter in 1844 and has held one ever since. This means that the University of Saint Mary of the Lake is the possessor of the longest continuous academic charter in the state of Illinois.
